27.15 O
octet rule
A rule that states that atoms tend to form compounds in ways that give them eight valence electrons and thus
the electron configuration of a noble gas.
orbital
The three-dimensional region of space that indicates where there is a high probability of finding an electron.
organic chemistry
A branch of chemistry that is the study of carbon-containing chemicals.
organic compounds
Covalently bonded compounds containing carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides.
oxidation
The full or partial loss of electrons, or the gain of oxygen.
oxidation number
A positive or negative number that is assigned to an atom to indicate its degree of oxidation or reduction.
oxidation-reduction reaction
A reaction that involves the full or partial transfer of electrons from one reactant to another.
oxidizing agent
A substance that causes oxidation by accepting electrons.
oxoacid
Acid that consists of hydrogen, oxygen, and a third element.
