ofaspecificlevel.Iftheadventuringpartyisrelativelyweak,
it’suptotheplayerstochoosewhethertofleeinsteadoffight,
negotiateinsteadofattack,orsurrenderinsteadofdie.It’sup
toyouastheDMtobeflexibleandkeepthestorymoving
forwardasbestyoucan.Ifanencounterisgoingbadlyforthe
adventurers,youcanhavethemonsterssuddenlywithdraw,
demandtheparty’ssurrender,ordealnonlethaldamage.You
canhaveanNPCshowuptolendassistance.Mindless
predatorsmightbescaredoffbyasuddenvolcaniceruptionor
earthtremor.Inshort,thereisalwaysawaytoturntheparty’s
misfortuneintoafightingchanceofsurvival.
