Groak(goldgrungelitewarriorwearingacircletof
blasting)isthelovestruckkingwhoseekstowoothegoddess
Nangnang.Charismaticbutunstable,Groakcanswingfrom
friendlytohomicidalinthespanofafewseconds.Becauseof
this,hispeopledarenotevenwhisperaharshwordabouthim.
Groakwantstobeseenasavisionaryandaromantic,andhe
lovestohearstoriesoftheoutsideworld.However,he
threatensanyonewhodarestoquestionhisinflatedself-
image.Groaktoleratesadventurersaslongastheyentertain
him,generallyagreewitheverythinghesays,andarewilling
toaidhiminhisquesttorealizehisdivinedestinytobecome
Nangnang’sconsort.
Krr’ook(redgrungwildling)isagrungpriestwhofears
theking’smadness.Shewhispersfavorablesignsandomensin
theking’seartokeepinhisgoodgraces.Secretly,Krr’ook
suspectsthattheGreatRitualtosummonNangnangwillfail.
Consequently,shefearsforherlife.Sheapproachesthe
adventurerstoseeiftheycanhelpherfoolthekingonthe
nightoftheritual.IfKrr’ooksensesanythingoutofkilter,orif
theritualgoesawry,shescapegoatstheadventurersand
deliversthemstraightintotheking’sinfantilewrath.
Roark(orangegrungelitewarrior)isadutifuland
dangerousgrungwarrior,dedicatedtohismadking.Roark
thinksallthisgoddess-summoningnonsenseisdistracting
fromtherealissueathand:defendingDungrunglungfromthe
undead.Secretly,Roark’sloyaltyistothetribefirstandGroak
second,butRoarkisdutifullyabidingtheking’sobsessionfor
now.Heissuspiciousofadventurersyetopentohelpin
defendinghisvillagefromtheundead.

magical,twistedvines.Theouterwallbristleswiththornsthat
zombiesmindlesslyskewerthemselvesonintheirattemptsto
swarmoverit.
Themazehasonevisibleentrancetothenorthand
numeroussecretentranceselsewherearoundtheperimeter.A
secretentranceissimplyawell-hiddendoorwaythatrequires
asuccessfulDC 20 Wisdom(Perception)checktospot.
Themaze’spassagesareopentotheskyandmagically
changeconfigurationeveryminuteorso,turningpassageways
intodeadends,andviceversa.Whichevercharacterisleading
thewaythroughthemazemustmakesixsuccessfulDC 15
Wisdom(Survival)checkstofindtheentrancetothe
settlement(area 2 ).Eachsuccessfulorfailedcheckrepresents
1 minuteofsearchingthemaze.Betweeneachcheck,rolla
d 20 andconsulttheThornMazeEncounterstableto
determinewhat,ifanything,thecharactersencounter.

Throughanopeninginthemazewall,youseeasmall
lakesurroundedbyreedhuts,ferns,andlilypads.Rising
upfromaflatislandinthemiddleofthelakeisa 60 -
foot-tallshrinemadeofpaintedmudbricks,shapedin
thelikenessofagiantfrog.Stairsclimbfromthelake
shoretoanopendoorwaycarvedintothefrog’sfat
belly.Patrollingtheshrine’sperimeterareseveralsmall,
frog-likehumanoidswithbrightorangeskinand
shortbows.

Fourgreen-skinnedgrungs(warriors)emergefrom
nearbyhovelstoconfrontstrangerswhoapproachtheshrine
unescorted.Theyattackifnoonespeaksthecorrect
passphraseinGrung(“Roook,roooook,erp”).Ifafightbreaks
out,reinforcementsintheformoftwelvegrungsarrivein 2
rounds.Thegrungsinarea 3 beginshootingarrowsatthe
sametime.
3 .Groak’sIsle
Marshyshoressurroundtheshrine,whichis 60 feettall
andmadeofcarvedmudblockspaintedwithnaturaldyes.
Patrollingitsbaseareeightgrungelitewarriorswithorange
skin.Theywielddaggersandshortbows,andareloyalto
Roarkfirst,KingGroaksecond.Strangerswhoreachtheisland
withoutagrungescortareattacked.
4 .Shrine

Theinterioroftheshrineisonelarge,hollowroom.Just
insidetheentranceisaclearpoolofwaterthatranges
indepthfrom 2 to 5 feet.Phosphorescentfungi
illuminatethepoolwithsoft,dreamyhues.Short,frog-
likehumanoidsofdifferentcolorsarefussingwiththe
fungiandtossingflowerpetalsintothepool.

Theinterioroftheshrineisonelarge,hollowroom.Just
