shellsrattleinthebreeze,andsmokedriftsfromhut.Acreatureshufflesslowlyaroundthehut,hunchedover
inananimal-likeposture.Yourealizeit’sahuman
woman:impossiblyold,crippledbyarthritis,blindedby
cataracts.Herdarkfaceandbaldpateareoutlinedwith
streaksofyellowclaysuggestingtheshapeofaskull—
orperhapsit’shershriveledfleshcreatingthatillusion.NannyPu’pu,agreenhag,playsthepartofanancient
cronetothehilt.Sheclaimsthatall
theothervillagerswerekilledover
thecourseofmanyyearsbywinged
creaturesthatliveonthesouthsideof
theplateau.Sheistheonlysurvivor—
toostringyortoowilyforthe
predators.Shelivesontherootsinher
gardenandthefewbirdsandlizards
shecatchesinsnares.Ifaskedher
name,sheneedsseveralmomentsto
recallthatthevillagerscalledher
NannyPu’pu.
Thehagwantstwothingsfromthe
adventurers:forthemtodestroythe
nestofpterafolkonthesouthsideof
theplateau(see“PterafolkNest”
below),andthentobecomehermeals
forseveralmonths.She’snotlikelyto
attackthemopenly.She’dratherget
themofftheirguardandpickthemoff
onebyone,asshedidwiththe
villagers.
NannyPu’puisn’tentirelyalone.
Withawhistle,shecancallforth 2 d 6
flyingmonkeys(seeappendixD)that
liveinthetrees,andshehasaflesh
golemburiedinashallowgrave
outsidehersmallhut.Thehaguses
theflyingmonkeystogatherfoodand
supplies,buttheywon’tfightforher.
Thegolemwill,however;iterupts
fromtheearthasabonusactionif
commandedtoattack.
RiteofStolenLife
NannyPu’puisaworshiperofMyrkul,
theLordofBones,andknowsaritual
oftransformationthatcanturnadead
humanoidintoazombielikecreature.
Characterswhobringtheirdead
comradestoMbalacanaskNanny
Pu’putotransformthemintothewalkingdead.However,she
doesnothingforfree.Wipingoutthenestofpterafolkisthe
leastpaymentshe’llconsiderforthisritual.Shemightalso
requestalockofCommanderBreakbone’shairandafewofhis
fingernails(see“CampVengeance”)oroneofSajaN’baza’s
iridescentscales(see“Orolunga”).Eitherwouldcertainlybe
usedincastingevilmagic.
NannyPu’puistheonlycreatureinChultwhocanperform
theRiteofStolenLife.Theritualtakes 1 hourtocompleteand
requiresthreethings:amostlyintacthumanoidcorpse,a
gemstoneworthatleast 100 gp,and,mostdisturbingly,the
sacrificeofanotherhumanoid.Ifcharactersareunwillingto
sacrificeoneoftheirowntosaveafallencomrade,Nanny
Pu’purecommendstheycaptureagoblin,agrung,orother
humanoidandbringittoher.NannyPu’pukillsthesacrifice,
capturesitsspiritinthegemstone,andmagicallyembedsthe
stoneinthedeadhumanoid’sforehead.AfterNannyPu’pu
speaksaprayertoMyrkul,thespiritofthesacrificegainsthe
knowledgeandthepersonalityofthehumanoidtowhichitis
bound,ineffectimitatingthathumanoid’sspirit.Whenthe
ritualiscomplete,thedeadhumanoidawakensasiffroma
deepslumber,thoughitisnotalive.
Acharactertransformedbythisritualintothewalking
deadregainsallitshitpointsandretainsitsstatistics,except
asnotedhere:

movesthroughtheruinsnoticesthe
cistern.Theopeningis 15 feetin
diameter,andtheshaftdrops 15 feetto
scummy,blackwater.Thelipandwalls
ofthecisternarebrick-lined.
Thewateris 40 feetdeepandso
murkythatit’sheavilyobscured.
Unlesscharactershaveblindsight,they
mustfeeltheirwaywiththeirhands.
About 20 feetbelowthesurface,the
brickshavebeenpulledfromonewall
tocreateahole.Characterssearchingwiththeirhandsfindit
withasuccessfulDC 10 Dexteritycheck.Anarrow, 10 - foot-
longtunnelleadsfromtheholetoacramped,completely
floodedchamber.Inthechamberisatiedsackmadefrom
humanskin.Itcontainssixonyxgemstones( 50 gpeach),a
spellscrollofcomprehendlanguages,andtenadamantine
ingots( 10 gpeach)stampedwithdwarvenrunes.Theseare
identicaltotheingotsfoundinHrakhamar(see“Hrakhamar”).
