Thechwingausesitsmagictohideinamossystonedisk
underneaththecart(see“Queen’sDecree”below).Characters
whoapproachthecartnoticethattheareaisunusuallylush
andfulloflife.Iftheyleaveanoffering,thechwingatimidly
presentsitselftothem.Ifnot,thechwinga’snaturalcuriosity
forcesittoshadowthecharactersandspyonthem.
Thescentofhoneyforeshadowsthechwinga’sappearance,
andharmlessbeesfollowitaround.Ithasafascinationfor
humanoidhairandislikelytolatchontoabeardeddwarfora
characterwithcurlytresses.Whilethechwingaaccompanies
theparty,anyvegepygmiesthatencounterthegroupfleeas
soonastheydiscernthechwinga’spresence.Thechwinga’s
affinityforthenaturalworldkeepsitfromfollowing
charactersintoshrinesordungeons.
Queen’sDecree
Ifthecharacterslookunderthewagon,read:
Amoss-coveredstonedisklieshalf-buriedinthemud
underneaththewagon.Concentricringsofinscriptions
coveritssurface—somewritteninCommonand
othersetchedinjaggedcuneiform.
ThetabletisaproclamationfromanOmuanqueentoher
rivalsinMezro.TheMezroanscouldn’treadtheOmuans’
nativescript,sothetabletcontainsthesamemessagewritten
bothinCommonandOldOmuan.Itreads,“QueenNapaka
proclaimsthatthefreepeopleofOmufearnothing.Bravenew
godsprotectus,asUbtaodidbeforebutdoesnolonger.Omu
willriseagain,andNapakashallreclaimallthatishersby
rightofconquest.”
Usingthetablet,thecharacterscantranslateanymessage
writteninOldOmuan.Thetabletis 3 feetindiameterand
weighs 200 pounds,butcharacterswithinkandparchment
cancopyitortakearubbing.Ifthecharactersmovethetablet
fromthecart,theyenduptakingthechwingawithit.
12 .Wongo’sShrine
Carvingsofmonkeyshangingbytheirtailsdecoratetwo
crackedobelisksthatstandbeforeashrineenclosedby
brokenwalls.Pasttheobelisksisacourtyardfilledwith
horsetailsandarumlilies.Fivearchwaysopeninto
darknessatthebaseoftheruin.Mountedabovethe
centralarchisastoneplaquebearingacuneiform
inscription.
TheshrinetothetrickstergodWongo(representedbya
su-monster)containsoneofninepuzzlecubesneededtoenter
theTomboftheNineGods.Theinscriptionabovethecentral
archiswritteninOldOmuanandreadsasfollows:“Betterto
beWongo’sfriendthanhisenemy.”
Portcullises.Portcullisesareraisedintothelintelsabove
fourofthefiveentrancecorridors.Whenacharacterclaims
thepuzzlecubefromarea 12 B,theportcullisesslamshutand
sealoffthesecorridors.Eachportcullisweighs 600 pounds
andcanbeliftedbyoneormorecharacterswithacombined
Strengthscoreofatleast 20 .Acharactercanpreventa
portcullisfromdroppingbyjammingitwithatleasttwoiron
spikes.
12 A.CrackedObelisks
Creaturesthatpassbetweenthesetwoobeliskshearintheir
headsacacophonyofshriekingmonkeys.Thesoundfades
oncethecreaturesmoveelsewhere.Theshrieksareannoying
butharmless.Theobelisksarenotmagical,andtheireffect
can’tbedispelled.
12 B.TestofFriendship
Aten-foot-tallstonestatueofanevil-lookingmonkey
balancesonitstailatopastonedaisinthemiddleof
thistwenty-foot-highchamber.Thestatue’slimbsare
splayed,withhandsandfeetcupped.Onthewall
behind,asculptedreliefshowsamonkey-likecreature
tearingintoagiantserpent.Cuneiforminscriptionsare
carvedaboveandbelowtherelief.Fourmasksof
paintedstoneprotrudefromthewalls;theydepictthe
headsofalion,azebra,aboar,andavulture.
ThewallreliefshowsthetrickstergodWongo(asu-
monster)fightinghishatedenemy,Moa(ajaculi).Inscriptions
inOldOmuanexplainhowMoabetrayedWongotothegod
Ubtao(see“LegendoftheNineGods”).
StatueandPuzzleCube.Adetectmagicspellorsimilar
effectrevealsanauraofconjurationmagicaroundthestatue,
whichiseasytoclimb.Acharacterwhosearchesthestatue’s
baseuncoversthefollowinginscriptionwritteninOldOmuan:
“Wongo’sfriendknowswheretopourthewater.”Wongo’s
“friend”(thevulture)canbeidentifiedbyfiguringoutthelogic
puzzlewrittenabovethemasksintheviewingcorridors(area
12 C).
Whenacharacterpoursapintormoreofwaterintothe
statue’srighthandoroneofitscuppedfeet,theliquidsizzles
andtransformsinto 1 d 3 steammephitsthatfightuntil
destroyed.Thestatuecancreateuptosixsteammephitsin
thisfashion,afterwhichnomoremephitscanbecreateduntil
thenextdawn.Asteammephitreducedto 0 hitpointslosesits
formanddisappears.
Whenapintormoreofwaterispouredintothestatue’s
cuppedlefthand,Wongo’spuzzlecubeappearsbymagicon
thestatue’shead.Whenthepuzzlecubeappears,thecharacter
whopouredthewaterhearsasnarling,disembodiedvoicesay,
“Taketheprizeandcurseyourfriends,orfightmychildrento
claimit.Whatisyourchoice?”Ifacharactertakesthepuzzle
cube,themasksonthewallsdelivertheircurses(seearea
12 C).Ifnocharactertakesthecubeimmediately,the
portcullisesslamshutovertheentrancecorridorsinarea 12 A
asfoursu-monsters(seeappendixD)areteleportedintothe
room,clingingtothestatuelikestartledchildrentoa
protectiveparent.Thesu-monstersleapdownandattack.
Oncethesu-monstersappear,takingthepuzzlecubedoesn’t
triggerthemasks’curses.Thesummonedsu-monstersarereal,
andtheirbodiesdon’tdisappearwhentheydie.
Masks.Characterswhoexaminethestonemasksonthe
wallsseethattheireyesareopenholes,allowingonetopeer
intotheadjoiningcorridors(area 12 C).Themasksare
extensionsofthewallsandcan’tberemovedwithout
destroyingthem.
