Gish Jen (1956– )
Chinese American fiction writer whose works include the novel Typical American
(1991); its sequel, Mona in the Promised Land (1996); and a collection of short
stories, Who’s Irish? (1999).
Charles Johnson (1948– )
African American writer who began his career as a journalist and cartoonist
and then turned to fiction. His novels include Faith and the Good Thing (1974),
Oxherding (1982), Middle Passage (1990), and Dreamer (1998). The Sorcerer’s
Apprentice: Tales of Conjurations (1986) is a collection of stories, and Being and
Race: Black Writing since 1970 (1988) is a critical study.
Nora Okja Keller (1965– )
Novelist born in Korea to a Korean mother and German father. Comfort Woman
(1997) and Fox Girl (2002) are the first two works in a planned trilogy. She is
also the coeditor of Intersecting Circles: The Voices of Hapa Women in Poetry and
Prose (1999).
Laila Lalami (1968– )
Fiction writer born in Morocco. Her works are Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits
(2005) and Secret Son (2009).
Tato Laviera (1951– )
Playwright and poet who was born in Puerto Rico but has lived in New York
City since 1960. His poetry is collected in La Carreta Made a U-Turn (1979),
Enclave (1981), AmeRícan (1985), and Mainstream Ethics (1988). Olú Clemente
(1979) is a play.
Chang-rae Lee (1965– )
Writer who was born in Seoul, South Korea, and came to the United States with
his family in 1968. His novels are Native Speaker (1995), A Gesture Life (1999),
and Aloft (2004).
Chris McKinney (?– )
Hawaii-born novelist of mixed Korean, Japanese, and Scottish descent. His works
include The Tattoo (1999), The Queen of Tears (2001), Bolohead Row (2005), and
Mililani Mauka (2009).
Janice Mirikitani (1942– )
Japanese American poet. Her collections are Awake in the River (1978), Shedding
Silence (1987), We the Dangerous (1995), and Love Works (2001).
Nicholasa Mohr (1938– )
Graphic artist and writer born in New York to Puerto Rican parents. Her works
include Nilda (1973), El Bronx Remembered (1975), In Nueva York (1977), Felita
(1979), Rituals of Survival: A Women’s Portfolio (1985), Going Home (1986), All
