The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman repre-
sents the numerous stories of slave life that have
been silenced in history. Though a fictional per-
sona, Jane embodies both the triumph and the
suffering of many unknown, but real, men and
women. The closing scene of the novel, where Jane
finally drinks from a “whites only” fountain, por-
trays the victory of the African-American spirit
over adversity.
