Captain James Cook is considered one of the
greatest explorers the world has ever known. He was
born in Yorkshire, England, in 1728, and died in the
Sandwich Islands (now known as the Hawaiian
Islands) in 1779.
Cook led many voyages of exploration on his
ship, the Endeavour, on behalf of the British
Empire. He was hailed as an excellent
navigator and a respected captain. He also
was the first captain to prevent his crew from
developing scurvy, a disease that occurs from
a lack of Vitamin C. He did this by insisting
they eat fresh fruit and pickled cabbage.
Cook was the first European to visit the Pacific
Islands and is said to have sailed farther south than any other explorer in European history.
Cook and his crew visited many lands, including Australia and New Zealand, and claimed
them as British territory.
