Prediction:
You may be acquainted with your family veterinarian, or vet, who treats your
family pet. However, the field of veterinary medicine is not limited to taking care
of dogs and cats. Some vets specialize, or restrict their practice, to certain kinds of
animals, such as horses, birds, reptiles, or zoo animals.
Other kinds of vets may treat just certain types of animal
problems—for example, eye or skin diseases. Farmers
and ranchers may hire vets to manage their cattle,
dairy, or poultry farms. Professors of veterinary
medicine work at universities teaching students who
will some day become vets. Still other vets conduct
research or work for companies that make human
drugs. So you see, many types of work are possible
for someone who chooses to become a vet.
