ruins of ancient homes in Greece, Rome, Persia, and the Far East. The
Romans called the game tabula, which in English means tables.

them. Adults and children played tables during the
Middle Ages. In the 1600s the name of the game was
changed to backgammon, which means, “back game”
in Middle English.
