The shining eyes of an

inquisitive child are a wonder

to behold. A marvel when a

youngster is finding a recipe for

silly putty, but not so endearing when they are

hacking your router or looking at the wrong

sites to broaden their biology knowledge.

Apple is one step ahead of enquiring minds

and has created excellent controls for parents

to invoke. It’s relatively straightforward to lock

strangers out of an iOS device, but there’s

a broader variety of options at your disposal

to restrict what your kids can do.

Own phone restrictions

While smartphone ownership is increasingly

a rite of passage for youngsters, prior to that

they’ll be using a parent’s device. A temporary

restriction is ideal in this situation, and the

easiest way to set that up is by using Guided

Access, which restricts the user to one app.

If a child gets their own iPhone or iPad,

there’s scope to customise what they’re

allowed to do with it using Screen Time. You

can then make certain apps and abilities

off-limits entirely, or block some web content.

There are two options for limiting web

access. For very young kids, a ready-made list

of acceptable sites such as CBeebies and

Disney is offered. Other sites can be added.

For older children, the Limit Adult Websites

option is more flexible, but still very effective.

Some older children may look at these

limits as a challenge to overcome. Restricting

changes to passcodes and accounts can

secure the system – just don’t let them see
