ProQuest Newsstand offers a collection of 500 newspapers, 350 of them
with full texts of their articles. It includes major national and international
newspapers, and the coverage for many of them reaches back into the 1980s
and 1990s. Libraries can select individual titles or choose from several subsets
of databases (i.e., by region or state or ethnic interest). The ProQuest Historical
Newspapers collection offers digitized versions of a number of newspapers,
many of them dating back to the mid- and late nineteenth century and a few
going even further back.

specialized Indexes

There are also various special indexes offering access to specific subject areas
and particular types of publications. Here are some examples: Book Review
Digest, published by H. W. Wilson since 1905, is issued monthly (except
February and July) and in quarterly and annual cumulations. It offers cita-
tions to and excerpts from the reviews of
thousands of books each year published
in more than 100 periodicals. Book Review
Index, published by Gale Cengage, is issued
three times a year in an annual cumulation.
It provides citations to reviews from more
than 900 publications and is also available
online. Play Index, published by H. W. Wil-
son since 1949, helps the reader locate indi-
vidual plays as well as plays in collections.
Entries include such details as the size of
the cast and the number of acts and scenes. Short Story Index, published by
H. W. Wilson since 1900, is an annual publication indexing short stories
in collections and periodicals. Both the Play Index and Short Story Index are
available in print and online versions. The Essay and General Literature Index,
published by H. W. Wilson since 1900, is issued twice a year and cumulated
annually. It indexes essays, mainly in the social sciences and humanities,
found in anthologies and collections. Wilson also publishes a number of other
specific subject indexes, including Art Index, Education Index, and Library
Literature and Information Science Index. Go to http://www.ebscohost.com for more
