Maps illustrating states’ foreign-born populations and the twenty metropolitan areas with the most
immigrants in 1900 and 2010. In 1900 nearly all went to the Northeast and Upper Midwest, the
heartland of the industrial economy. In 2010 the largest number headed for cities in the South and
West, especially California, although major cities of the Northeast also attracted many newcomers.
