20 There are two other philosophers who began to advance accounts of this sort about a
decade ago, around the same time that Vihvelin (2004) first proposed a view of this
type: Michael Smith (2003) and Michael Fara (2008). Smith’s position isn’t as soph-
isticated as Vihvelin’s, and it remains undeveloped. Fara’s view is impressive, but
Fara has left philosophy and will not pursue the position further. Vihvelin’s is now
the best- developed position of this sort, and it is a serious and major contender among
compatibilist views.
21 Randolph Clarke, “Free Will and Abilities to Act,” presented at a symposium on Vih-
velin (2013) at the University of Southern California, September 2014.
22 Vihvelin’s argument against Preemptor cases has been disputed by John Fischer
(2008), Simon Kittle (2014), and in a forthcoming article by Carolina Sartorio. While
Vihvelin’s book features a resourceful defense of her view against Fischer, this
defense is in turn ably contested by Kittle and by Sartorio.
