Listen & Refl ect

  1. What aspects of the “Tonight” ensemble add to its operatic effect, and what aspects seem
defi nitely non-operatic? How does each set of attributes help or hinder the dramatic
    situation?

  2. Choreographer Jerome Robbins originated the idea for the show and directed the 1961
fi lm version. Robbins’s choreography mixes elements of ballet with vernacular theatrical
dance, much as Bernstein’s music mixes opera and musical comedy styles. After viewing
the fi lm’s opening sequence on DVD or online, compare its mixture of ballet and street
gangs to this ensemble’s mixture of opera and street gangs.
