Now that you’ve learned the basics of film “language” and have gotten a taste of film history and film pro-
duction, you’re probably eager to see more movies. In addition to the lists of movies at the end of each chap-
ter, the following “best” lists should provide you with a lifetime of viewing options.


Academy Award Winners for Best Picture

The following is a list of all “Best Picture”^1 Academy Award winners, from the first year of the award
through 2011. Although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is organized by crafts—for
example, cinematographers vote for the cinematography awards, film editors vote for the editing awards,
and so on—all Academy members vote for the Best Picture award.

(^1) The phrase Best Picturewas not always the designation that the Academy reserved for this award. In 1928 and 1929, the desig-
nation was Outstanding Picture; from 1930 to 1940, Outstanding Production; from 1941 to 1943, Outstanding Motion Picture; from
1944 to 1961, Best Motion Picture; and since 1962, Best Picture.
