One Hundred Greatest Movies of All Time

Following publication of the American Film Institute’s list, many critics and pundits criticized it for its
omissions and the order of its rankings. Among the alternative lists that were published soon after the
AFI’s was Entertainment Weekly’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time, published in book form in 1999. The list
was selected from 500 choices nominated by Entertainment Weekly’s editors. In addition to correcting what-
ever omissions the Entertainment Weeklyeditors perceived in AFI’s listing of top American movies, the list
also included movies made outside the United States.
