In Production

In fact, during production, sound mixers record more than just the sync

sound as described. When on a set or location, the recordist generally

provides other sounds to be used when sound editing for the fi lm occurs.

First, the mixer needs to record diff erent samples of ambient sound in order

to have this track for use during editing, particularly if dialogue needs to

be replaced in post-production recording. Ambient sound is sound that

is recorded during production to preserve the noise that is present on

location or a set. Th is includes room tone, which is simply the noise that is

present in an interior without any actors or technicians talking or making

any noise.

Th e sound team may also record wild sound, which is non-synchronous

sound recorded during production. It is recorded on location separate from

the picture for possible use in the sound mix. Some wild sound consists

of sound eff ects, which are noises other than dialogue created by people,

animals, and objects during the movie. Th ese sounds, such as footsteps or

doors opening and closing, are added to the fi lm during post-production.

Wild sound also includes off -camera lines and non-sync dialogue recorded

because of production diffi culties.

Post-Production Sound

During post-production, sound eff ects can be added to match the actions

on the screen. Foley eff ects are noises created to synchronize with the images

recorded during production. In a sound studio with a projection or viewing

system, foley artists use a wide variety of materials and objects to produce

sound eff ects directly in sync with the motion picture as it is viewed.
