Notes for Students and Teachers

As its title indicates, Moving Images: Making Movies, Understanding Media is
designed to facilitate the most widespread opportunities of investigation into
motion picture media—from celluloid fi lms to digital video and from feature
fi lms to commercials on television and the Internet. However, it was clear that
in order to function properly and easily as a source for introductory motion
picture media courses, the work with the textbook had to be designed for
live-action production. Th us, animation techniques are not covered in this
book, although animated movies are used as learning sources and investigative
tools throughout the text, and there are many references to animators and
various types of animation.
At the end of each chapter, students are off ered three types of exercises: Analysis,
Writing, and Projects. In addition, many more activities are off ered for the
classroom in the Teacher’s Resources package that accompanies the text.

Analysis

Analysis work is provided to develop students’ understanding and evaluative
skills in motion picture media. Th e questions included in the student and
teacher resources are written to facilitate conceptual understanding of unit
material, so they can be applied to motion pictures that appropriately illustrate
those themes. Movies are provided on the textbook DVD, and additional
selections are available through Cengage on the Internet. Lists of additional
motion picture resources for each chapter are included in the instructor
CD-ROM and through the textbook website.
When viewing and reacting to motion pictures, we are aff ected in a multitude
of ways. One must consider many factors when examining the meaning and
