Moving Images, Understanding Media

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
Preface xi

is a selection of additional shooting assignments in the Instructor Resources
package. Th ese may be used in class to develop formative skills and explore
avenues of creative inquiry investigated in the chapter.
Collaborative work is at the heart of most motion picture production, and
cooperative learning forms the core of the work appearing in this textbook.
Th e projects in this textbook have been designed for individual responsibility
and collaborative support to reach personal goals and group objectives. Th us,
it is important for groups to delineate responsibilities clearly for fairness in
assessment.
In addition, all students will have the opportunity to write and direct the stories
that they devise. If individual students do not have the chance to create a movie
from an original concept at a particular time, they will have the opportunity
to produce that story for a project during the following chapters. Over the
course of a series of units, all students have the opportunity personally to
write and direct a project of their choice, which generally stems from material
generated in the preceding lessons. Th is will be the case throughout the work
associated with this textbook.

Reports
Reports are provided for each major Project in this text. Th ey are to be written
for the following reasons:

  • To formulate in-depth self-evaluation by each student regarding
    the exercises done in class.

  • To record a shoot-by-shoot analysis of successes and failures
of group work so that students can improve both individual
    performance and inter-personal skills.

  • To provide full information to the teacher for proper evaluation of
each student’s work. Th ey are to be used as an assessment tool in
addition to classroom observation and notes.
