A study of the works, in rich musical and political context. Genesis, reception,
chronology of the operas, all with full documentation. “Mozart and Salieri”
(p.459–492) addresses their relationship; Rice concludes that they were rivals,

mary and secondary sources, expansive index.

ered in a thorough bibliographic essay. The third volume comprises docu-
ments. Index of names, places, and titles.

knotes, bibliography of some 150 items, index of names and titles.

rapita. These are discussed in detail, with attention to plot, performance his-
tory, and changes made in them by Haydn. La scuola de’ gelosiwas particu-
larly successful, with 23 performances in 1780–1781. Relationship between
the two composers is also considered. Salieri’s sonnet about Haydn, in Italian,
    is reproduced in the article.
