Opera

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
Reports on a symposium sponsored by the International Society for Contem-
porary Music. A chatty view of the “current scene” has little value. An essay
by Elizabeth Wood, “1840–1965: Precedents and Problems for the Australian
Opera Composers,” includes a few facts. No index.

  1. Australian Music Centre. Directory of Australian Composers Represented in
the Collection of the Australian Music Centre. 2nd ed. Ultimo, N.S.W.: The
    Centre, 1988. i, 38p. ISBN 0-900168-25-3. ML21 .A86 L46.
First edition, 1978. Lists the works of about 150 persons. The index identifies
    about 60 operas.

The spectacular Sydney Opera House opened in 1970 and has spawned a number of
descriptive publications. This one seems to cover the main points:

  1. Hubble, Ava. More than an Opera House.Sydney: Sydney Opera House,

  2. 67p.
Not seen; described in RILMas an illustrated booklet on “planning, design,
construction, decoration, management, financing, organization and uses” of
the house; with dimensions, facilities, photographs, and notes on artists and
others associated with the complex. Other writings on the opera house are
listed in Stoddard (#127). Annual reports of Opera Australia have been issued
since 1972, with details on all productions.

Austria (French: Autriche; German: Österreich)

The vast literature on opera in Austria, especially in Vienna, is represented here by
only a few useful works. A larger selection, including materials of wider scope in
which opera has its place, will be found in IOM1576–1643. Two handbooks form
convenient entry points:

Music in General

  1. Goertz, Harald. Musikhandbuch für Österreich. 3rd ed. Vienna: Doblinger,

  2. xii, 168p. ISBN 3-900-6952-53. ML21 .A9 G6.
First edition, 1983. A good collection of information on musical life: schools,
archives and libraries, theaters, orchestras and other performing groups,
church music, radio and television, record studios, associations, institutions,
and publishers. Locations (street names) of monuments are given, and these
are numerous in Austria: Vienna alone has 21 for Beethoven, and Graz has 4
    for Schubert. Bibliography, index.

The other handbook of interest is an older one by Brody, in the series noted at #144*.
Concert and opera reviews are found in several periodicals, of which this is the best
known:

2131.Österreichische Musiikzeitschrift,1–, January 1946–. Vienna: H. Bauer, 1946–.
Monthly. ML5 .O1983.
Includes some scholarly articles as well as short feature material. All musical
topics are covered, with emphasis on Austria. Calendars and reviews of perfor-
mances in Austria and neighboring countries, reviews of books and recordings.
