Vienna: Das Wiener Opernhaus (Staatsoper)

The Hofoper became the Staatsoper in 1918. This is the famous Vienna Opera. It was
destroyed in a bombing on 12 March 1945, rebuilt and reopened on 5 November

  1. Of the many histories, these are the most useful:

  2. Beetz, Wilhelm. Das Wiener Opernhaus, 1869 bis 1945.2nd ed. Vienna:
    Panorama, 1955. 288p. ML1723.8 .V62 O73.
First edition, 1949 (the only one seen). A statistical history, with many lists and
tables: complete record of performances of 337 German operas and Singspiele,
42 Italian and French operas; ballets and other stage works, 1869–1919. Lists
of directors and performers, including orchestral musicians, by nationality and
by instrument or specialty. Table of titles of all works given, with premiere and
later productions of each year, 1869–1944; chronology of notable perfor-
mances, 1926–1944. The 80 plates show the interior and exterior. Access to all
these data is slow, since there is no index.

  3. Haas, Robert. Die Wiener Oper.Vienna: Eligius, 1926. 70p. and plates.
    ML1723.8 .V62 S825.
A strong, concise narrative history. Much information on design and construc-
tion of the 1869 building, including names of painters and sculptors, etc. The
architects, August Siccard von Siccardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, receive
considerable attention. Details of doorways, statuary, salons, lunettes, and
exteriors are shown in 59 plates. No index.

  4. Hadamowsky, Franz. Die Wiener Hoftheater (Staatstheater), 1776–1966.
    Vienna: G. Prachner, 1966–1975. 2v. PN2616 .W7 H2.
A well-documented narrative account of the Vienna Opera and its predecessor,
the Hoftheater. Includes a list of performances from 1811 to 1974, with
    staff—but not casts—identified. Name indexes.

Three popular histories of the Vienna Opera have been translated into English:

  1. Klein, Rudolf. The Vienna State Opera.Vienna: Lafite, 1969. 80p. ML1723.8
    .V62 S83.
Originally Die Wiener Staatsoper(1967). A well-illustrated volume, with a list
of premieres 1869–1969 and a list of opera directors.

  2. Kralik, Heinrich. The Vienna Opera. Vienna: Brüder Rosenbaum, distributed
    in the U.S. by Heineman, 1963. 189p. ML1723.8 .V6 K7.
