    Les Comédiens Italiens began performing on 19 May 1577 in Paris. A second
    troupe arrived in 1584, a third in 1588. Presented here are plots and descrip-
    tions of many plays, names of casts, and extracts from relevant privileges and
    documents. Despite the book’s title, the period covered in the volume seen is
    1645–1674.

    Features a vast foldout chart: “Tableau des pièces représentées,” which shows

Paris: Théâtre Lyrique


This company was established in 1851 as an outgrowth of a Théâtre National that
began in 1847, taking its present name in 1852. It was the site of several major pre-
mieres, including Gounod’s Faust(1859), Berlioz’s Les troyens à Carthage(1863), and
Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette(1867).

    A thorough history, with much information on finances and audiences. Lacks
    attention to concurrent activity in the Opéra and other Parisian houses, thus
    offering an isolated view of “second empire opera.” Poorly printed illustra-

    names and titles.

    almost all of Offenbach’s operas and became known as the Théâtre Offenbach.
    Without documentation, index, or bibliography.
