Berlin
The principal theaters are:
Die Deutsche Staatsoper, also known as Die Lindenoper. Originally (1742) Die
Königlichen Hofoper unter den Linden, renamed Die Staatsoper, in 1919. Destroyed in
1941 or 1943 (sources differ), rebuilt and again destroyed in 1945, reopened in 1955.
Die Nationaltheater, opened in 1786. Mozart’s operas performed there from
- The company moved in 1800 with the name Nationaltheater, occupying the
Schauspielhaus to 1817 (burned) and Neues Schauspielhaus, 1821.
Kroll Oper, 1844. In 1895 became part of the Schauspieltheater, renamed Neues
Königlichen Operettentheater, in 1900; destroyed in 1943 and not rebuilt. Kroll was
also the familiar name given to the Staatsoper am Platz der Republik, under the direc-
tion of Otto Klemperer, 1927–1931 (closed).
Die Komische Oper, 1905–1911; at the Metropol Theater from 1947, under the
direction of Walter Felsenstein; new building, 1966, director Götz Friedrich.
Die Deutsche Oper Berlin, so named from 1961 with the restoration of the the-
ater. Opened in 1912 as Deutsches Opernhaus, under the direction of Hartmann;
renamed Städtische Oper in 1925. Reorganized in 1933 under the Nazis, as Deutsches
Opernhaus (Goebbels director); renamed Städtische Oper in Teater des Westens in
