Dresden
There has been opera in the city since 1638. The first opera house opened in 1667.
The Königlich Sächsisches Hoftheater (known as the Semper, for the architect Gott-
fried Semper) opened in 1841, burned in 1869. A second Semper, 1878, was renamed
the Staatsoper; it was destroyed in 1945. The new Semper opened on 13 February
1985.
