Mannheim
The Nationaltheater opened in 1779, was destroyed in World War II, and replaced by
a new building in 1957. Earlier opera in the city took place in the palace theater,
1742–1795.

Opera was heard in the city from 1653, at a granary in Salvatorplatz. The Residenz-
theater (Cuvilliéstheater) opened in 1753, was destroyed in 1944, and was rebuilt in

destroyed in 1943, reopened in 1963, and now houses the Bavarian State Opera (Bayer-
