Not many libraries have this journal, but the article is worth searching out as
the most dependable brief review. It begins in the early sixth century. Opera in
the 18th century has considerable attention, and modern works are discussed. - De Brito, Manuel Carlos. Opera in Portugal in the Eighteenth Century. New

Originally the author’s dissertation, U. of London, 1985. Praised by Baronas
the best English-language summary of baroque opera in the country, “full of
scholarly data.” Discusses the period 1708–1797, covering Italian influences,
the tenure of Domenico Scarlatti in Lisbon 1719–1729, public and court the-
aters, important singers, “musical inclinations of the royalty and aristocracy,”
and the puppet operas of the dramatist António José da Silva. Chronology for
the period, without casts. Appendix of documents, backnotes, bibliography of
about 200 items, and index of names and topics. De Brito’s essay in Teatro y
música(#2667) presents useful citations to recent articles dealing with opera

Although most of this volume concerns a form of cantata called vilhancico,it

Six monographs by one of the most important Portuguese scholars are found in Mário
de Sampayo Ribeiro, Achegas para a história da música em Portugal, 1932–61(Lis-
bon: Pereira Rosa, 1932–1961; 6v. in 3). Francisco Marques de Sousa Viterbo, Subsí-
dios para a história da música em Portugal(Coimbra: Imprensa da Universidade,
1932), presents historical data in the form of a biographical dictionary. Another bio-
graphical work, Os músicos portuguezes: Biographia-bibliographia, by Joaquím
Antonio da Fonseca E. Vasconcellos (Pôrto: Imprensa Portugueza, 1870; 2v.), is useful
for worklists and historical context; it includes a chronology of performances of
