    A strong history of 18th-century performances, in narrative style, with
    chronologies 1727–1797 (no casts). No bibliography, but 525 footnotes iden-
    tify the relevant writings. Index of names, topics, and titles.


IOM2905–2918 and 2955–2968 give many other perspectives on Spanish opera in
the cities and regions.


Sweden (Swedish: Sverige; German: Schweden)


Major opera productions have taken place in Stockholm since the mid–18th century.
The first permanent theater was built in the suburb of Drottningholm in 1754; it
burned in 1762, was rebuilt in 1766, and is still in use. Its story is told in:

    The INC was formed in 1968 to support Swedish composers. The book nar-
    rates its work and presents a general picture of Swedish musical life, together
    with maps and lists of orchestras, opera houses, and music schools. No index.

    This useful overview of musical activity includes a section (p.61–87) on musi-
    cal theater. It gives brief notes about opera composers and the performances at
    the Royal Opera and other theaters. Index.

  6. Ralf, Klas. Kungliga Teatern repertoar 1773–1973: Opera, operett, sångspel,
    balett.Stockholm: Operan, 1974. 219p. ML1745.8 .S82 K88.
    A valuable account of the Royal Opera Company (Kungliga Teatern; estab-
    lished 1773), with chronologies and casts. The company has had numerous
    venues, culminating in the opening of today’s principal theater, the Kungliga
    Teatern, in 1898. Tours of the company, as well as visiting companies in Stock-
    holm. Composers and their works, with performance statistics (the most popular
    opera, by far, has been Carmen;the only native opera on the list is Blomdahl’s
    Aniara,number 66). Titles are in Swedish and the original language, and there
    is a two-page summary of the contents in English. Ballet is in a separate sec-
