Backdoor Methods

You have to know math to do well at the Science high schools. No one is disputing this—and if you are really uncomfortable with
math, you may want to consider why you’re applying to these schools. However, the main thing to remember here is that this test is
just a standardized admissions test. The timing is tight, and no one is going to check your math. If a backdoor method gets you the
answer more quickly, use it.

Remember that the SHSAT is not a math test—it’s an admissions exam. You don’t have to do the math the “right” way. You

just need to get the right answer.

There are two backdoor methods that are likely to serve you well on the test—picking numbers and backsolving.
