SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

The exponent of a power of 10 indicates how many zeros the number would contain if it were written out. For example, 104 =
10,000 (4 zeros) since the product of four factors of 10 is equal to 10,000.

When multiplying a number by a power of 10, move the decimal point to the right the same number of places as the number of zeros
in that power of 10.

When dividing by a power of 10, move the decimal point to the left.

Multiplying by a number with a negative exponent is the same as dividing by a positive exponent. Therefore, when you multiply by a
number with a positive exponent, move the decimal to the right. When you multiply by a number with a negative exponent, move the
decimal to the left.

0.0123 × 10^4 = 123

43.21 ÷ 10^3 = 0.04321
