When there is an odd number of terms, the median of a group of terms is the value of the middle term with the terms arranged in
increasing order.
When there is an even number of terms, the median is the average of the two middle terms with the terms arranged in increasing
order.
The mode is the value of the term that occurs most.
Note: Not all sets have a mode.
Exercise
First, put the terms in order from small to large: 15, 15, 18, 20, 32.
Then, identify the middle term. The middle term is 18.
In the above list, 15 occurs twice, so it is the mode.
There are five children whose ages are 11, 5, 8, 5, and 6.
