New York City SHSAT 2017

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

Overview

You’ll definitely see some geometry on the SHSAT. Like the rest of the math you’ll see on the test, SHSAT geometry will range from
straightforward to difficult and tricky. You can count on seeing questions that test your knowledge of lines and angles, triangles,
circles, and other assorted geometric figures. Additionally, you’ll see a little coordinate geometry. Remember that diagramless
geometry can also show up as word problems.

The most helpful thing you can do is review geometry content and practice a whole bunch of geometry problems. Before moving
forward, you should turn to the Resources Section in the back of the book and review 100 Essential Math Concepts items 69–100.
Next, read through this chapter, spending more time with the subjects that are less familiar to you. Make certain that you do all of the
problems in the practice set, even if you feel comfortable with the geometry problems presented.

A major point to remember is that you should not assume that diagrams are drawn to scale. Keep this in mind so that you do not
carelessly “eyeball” diagrams and reach false conclusions.

DON’T LET YOUR EYES FOOL YOU

Figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. Don’t “eyeball” unless specifically told the diagram is drawn to scale.
