At the end of the nineteenth century, a new wave
of immigration caused a massive population explosion
in the United States. Between 1880 and 1910, 18
million immigrants flooded into the U.S. from
( 5 ) southern and eastern Europe, attracted by economic
opportunity, religious freedom and political
democracy. Few immigrants of this period found life
in America easy, however. Many of those who lacked
professional skills and did not speak English found
( 10 )themselves living in slum conditions in the sprawling
cities of the Northeast, exploited by their employers
and trapped at poverty level.
Around the turn of the century a number of
different organizations made efforts to help these
( 15 )newly arrived immigrants adapt to American life. Two
groups in particular emerged as leaders in these
efforts. These two groups, however, had very
dissimilar ideas about how to go about assimilating
the immigrants.
