New York City SHSAT 2017

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

You’ll notice that Logical Reasoning questions are kind of like games or puzzles. They’re designed to test your skills at making
deduction and understanding arguments. If you find them a little intimidating at first, relax. If you practice the Kaplan strategies,
they’ll get easier. If you find them kind of fun, go with it. Many test takers find that Logical Reasoning questions liven up the Verbal
Section.

Reading

The Directions: The beginning of the Reading section will look like this:

Reading
Questions 21–50

Read each passage below and answer the questions following it. Base your answers only on what you have read in the
passage. You may reread a passage if you need to. Mark the best answer for each question.

As with Logical Reasoning questions, it is crucial that you restrict your answers to Reading questions to what you have read in the
passage. Bringing in outside information is a great way to get yourself in trouble. These questions test your understanding of what
you’ve read in the passages.

Although the Department of Education calls this section “Reading,” Kaplan calls this section “Reading Comprehension” because the
questions don’t test your ability to read as much as they test your ability to understand what you’ve read. You’ll get five passages,
each followed by six questions, covering a range of topics. Remember, the fact that you may be applying to a “science” high school
does not mean that you want to show off on the science passages. These questions do not test any outside knowledge of science.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS ON THE PAGE

Stick to the passage. Don’t bring outside knowledge into Reading questions. You don’t need it.
