New York City SHSAT 2017

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1

The Format

This is what the questions look like. You’ll see six sentences—one Topic Sentence and five other sentences listed in no particular
order. The five sentences will be lettered Q, R, S, T, and U. Each sentence will have a line short line next to it.

Paragraph 1
Porpoises and sharks appear to be similar in that they are streamlined, are good swimmers, and live in the sea.

Q. For example, the shark has gills, cold blood, and scales, whereas the porpoise has lungs, warm
blood, and hair.
R. Important differences are apparent, however, to marine biologists who study these species.
S. The porpoise, on the other hand, is fundamentally more like man than like the shark—and it
therefore belongs to the order of mammals.
T. Armed with the knowledge that the porpoise is a mammal, the biologist can then confidently predict
that porpoises have a four-chambered heart and bones of a particular type.
U. From this contrast in features, the zoologist knows that the shark has the physiology of a fish.

Use the lines next to each sentence to keep track of your work. For example, if sentence Q were the sentence following the Topic
Sentence (it’s not, by the way), then you would jot down a “1” on the line next to Q. This would help you keep the sentences straight
when you transfer your answers to the answer grid.

The Scrambled Paragraph section of the answer grid will look like this:

Paragraph 1

The first sentence is Q R S T U
The second sentence is Q R S T U
The third sentence is Q R S T U
The fourth sentence is Q R S T U
The fifth sentence is Q R S T U

Again, if Q were the first sentence folowing the Topic Sentence (which it still is not), you would bubble in Q where it says, “The
first sentence is.”
