Q. Passive margins are created relatively slowly and are characterized by flat regions of accumulated
sediment that develop between the drifting plates.
R. Thus, scientists are able to identify both passive and active margins by the nature of their geological
features.
S. In this second method, the process is quicker and triggers volcanic activity and mountain building.
T. The other method creates active or convergent margins when an oceanic plate is driven beneath a
continental plate.
U. In one method, continental margins known as passive or rifted margins are formed when two plates
move away from a mid-ocean rift.

Paragraph 12

Despite the wide variety of so-called cold remedies on the market today, no genuine cure for the common cold exists.

Q. Although the use of such treated tissues would not actually cure a cold, their power to neutralize
these particles would effectively hinder the spread of the cold from individual to individual.
R. Although many of these treatments are very popular, pills and liquids can offer only suppression of
the overt symptoms of a cold and do not actually cure it.
S. Recent research involving chemically treated tissues has yielded interesting results, though.
T. Thus, the duration of the illness is not lessened even though the discomfort caused by its symptoms
may be.
U. When cold sufferers sneeze into tissues treated with virus-killing liquids, the particles that would
otherwise spread the cold to susceptible bystanders are, to a large extent, neutralized.

Paragraph 13

Historian Fernand Braudel became famous for his view of history as a dynamic interaction of three categories of elements.

Q. In the first of these groups were the short-lived and often dramatic events, such as battles and
revolutions, which had previously been the focus of traditional historians.
R. Braudel has been criticized by many for the imprecision resulting from his attention to details that
lie outside traditionally conservative boundaries of historical inquiry.
S. However, his influence on later historians has ultimately been considerable because this breadth of
interest enabled him to raise questions that more conventional historians had overlooked.
T. The final category consisted of social and cultural practices that might remain unchanged for
hundreds of years.
U. In the second were cyclical processes, including the reigns of monarchs, which might last fifty years
or more.
