In context, which of the following is the best
word to use instead of “ones” in sentence 3?

(A) games
(B) cases
(C) characters
(D) reviews
(E) portions

“Ones” is a pronoun, so we need to read the
sentence above sentence 3 to see what the
“ones” refers to.

(2) A recent version of the acclaimed video
game Grand Theft Auto evoked disparaging
reviews from child advocates, they are people
who believe that violent games result in
aggressive behavior in children and teens.
(3) The only affirmative ones expressed relief
that the Entertainment Software Rating Board
(ESRB) rated the video game Mature.

The “ones” refers to “reviews.” Or you can go
through the answer choices one by one. Can
games express relief? No. Can cases express
relief? No. Can characters express relief? In
the game itself, yes, but in regards to the
reviews, no. Can “portions” express relief?
No. (D) is the correct answer.

In context, which of the following is the best
version of the underlined portion of sentence 5
(reproduced below)?

And Manhunt 2, the action/adventure game
sequel to Rockstar Games 2003’s Manhunt.

(A) (as it is now)
(B) Manhunt 2 is the
(C) Another supposed outrage is Manhunt 2,

(E) Yet consider Manhunt 2, which is the

Notice those words, “in context.” Be sure to
read the sentence before as well.

(4) Wouldn’t they be forever scarred to play
a video game that contained violence, strong
language, and sexual content? (5) And
Manhunt 2, the action/adventure game sequel
to Rockstar Games 2003’s Manhunt.

Did you notice that not only is sentence 5 a
fragment, but there is also no transition from
sentence 4? Eliminate (A).

(B) takes care of the sentence fragment issue,
but still doesn’t give us a transition, so is
probably not going to be the BEST answer.
(C) Another supposed outrage... gives us
the transition we want and fixes the sentence
fragment issue. The correct answer is (C).
(D) We can also take offense...provides a
transition and fixes the fragment, but goes
against the main idea. The author doesn’t think
video games are offensive, and so wouldn’t
use the pronoun “we” to include himself in the
group of critics.
(E) the “yet” indicates a flip in the direction of
the sentence, however, Manhunt 2 is given as
an additional example. The transition should
follow along the same direction as the sentence
before, not flip the direction.

An important tactic used in the first paragraph
is to

(A) expand on a perspective that contrasts with
the author’s argument
(B) use graphic detail to animate a personal
experience
(C) provide a well thought out, objective
analysis of modern parenting
(D) introduce an unconventional approach to
creating video games
(E) reveal the sense of playfulness implicit in
much parental concern

This is a general question. Reread the first
paragraph to familiarize yourself before
looking at the answer choices. Then go
through the answer choices one by one.
