Rule #6: Pronoun Case ...........................................................................

How to Find: Underlined pronouns.

How to Fix: Change to the correct type of pronoun.

Pronoun Case refers to the type of pronoun used: Subject Pronouns, Object Pronouns, or Possessive Pronouns.

Subject Pronouns: I he she we they who

Subject pronouns are the subject of the verb, meaning they are doing the action. That’s not hard to spot.

Example: He rode a bike.

ETS is more likely to test these pronouns in a trickier fashion.

Whenever you see a subject pronoun, look BEFORE the pronoun and you must see
“than,” “like,” “as,” or forms of the verb “to be” (is, are, was, were, am...).

Examples: No one is as mad as he. Look before the “he” and notice the “as.”
Danny is kinder than I. Look before the “I” and notice the “than.”

Object Pronouns: me him her us them whom

Object pronouns are the receiving pronouns, aka direct objects.

He gave the ball to me.

“Me” is not doing the action (that is the subject pronoun “he”) but is receiving the action (the ball).

To test object pronouns look BEFORE the pronoun and you must see a preposition.

Examples: ...with me...
...to him...
...by us...

Take a look at the following:

Are you going to the mall with Sue and I?

First notice the phrase Sue and. Whenever you see a noun (in this case Sue) followed by an “and” right before
a pronoun (in this case I) cross it out. It is there to distract you!
