Although the standards delineate what students should learn, teachers must still fill
in the blanks when it comes to translating this information for use in their daily classroom
practice. Questions often remain about how concepts should be connected and where
parameters should be set. The content of each course in A Story of Functions is contained
in four to five modules that span an academic year.
This chapter presents key information from the modules to provide an overview of the
content and explain the mathematical progression. The standards are translated for teachers
and a fuller picture is drawn of the teaching and learning that should take place through the
school year. Each module comprises the following:
An Overview of the module
Focus Standards
Extension Standards (when applicable)
Foundational Standards
Focus Standards for Mathematical Practice
Topic Overview narratives and Student Outcomes for each lesson
The Module Overview provides a broad overview for the entire module and includes
information on the sequencing of the topics. The Topic Overviews unpack the standards
by providing additional details about the skills and concepts students should master at
the lesson level. Further unpacking of the standards continues as the Student Outcomes
illuminate what students should know and be able to do to demonstrate mastery. This
information, taken together for all modules, tells a story of the mathematics students
should learn for the course.
