EASTERN EUROPE
This refers to countries such as Hungary and Poland that
came under Soviet control in 1945. It also refers to what
was the western Soviet Union. From 1989, the Communist
regimes in Eastern Europe collapsed and were replaced
by more dem o crat ic governments. Some countries kept
their bound a ries; others changed. There was also
communist rule in Yugoslavia, a country that broke up in
the early 1990s. After much bitter fighting, the nations of
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia,
Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia, were formed.
The majestic Pyrenees
(left) form a spectacular
natural border
between Spain
and France.
PYRENEES
The Pyrenees Mountains lie on the border between France
and Spain. The mountain range stretches from the Bay of
Biscay to the Mediterranean Sea, a distance of 270 miles
(435 km). The climate of the Pyrenees is mild and humid.
The moun tains offer fishing, sightseeing, and winter
sports. There are also health spas with hot springs.
POPULATION
More than 743 million
people live in Europe
and its population is highly
urbanized. In Belgium and
the Netherlands, more than
80 per cent of people live
in cities. In the south and
east, more people still live
in rural areas.
In 1992, UN
peacekeeping forces
entered war-torn Sarajevo,
the capital of Bosnia.
