OIL RICHES

Oil was first discovered in Brunei

in 1929. Since then, oil has also

been drilled offshore. Brunei’s most

important natural resource has

made the country very wealthy. Its

people enjoy free health care and

education, and pay no taxes.

RICE RESEARCH

Rice is the primary

food source for half

the world’s population.

Near Manila, in the

Philippines, scientists

are now experimenting

with ways of creating

rice plants that produce

greater yields. New

varieties are also being

developed to grow faster,

allowing farmers to

harvest and replant

several times during

one growing season.

THE PHILIPPINES

The people of the Philippines

are called Filipinos and are

mostly of Malay descent.

It is estimated that around

25 percent of the population

lives in poverty. As income is

higher in the cities, many

people move there in the hope

of escaping poverty. However,

lack of adequate housing means

that many poorer families have

to live in crowded slums.

STORMS AND VOLCANOES

The islands of the Philippines are

on a fault line and form part of the

“Pacific Ring of Fire”—an area prone

to volcanic activity and earthquakes.

When Mount Pinatubo, on the island

of Luzon, erupted in 1991, it destroyed

more than 40,000 homes.

In Malay,

orangutan

means

“man of the

jungle.”
