AVIATION INDUSTRYThe French were pioneers
of aviation. They co-built
Concorde and, in 1970, joined forces with German, Spanish, and UK companies to produce short- to medium-range aircraft that were both economic to run and carried up to 300 passengers. Called Airbus, these aircraft filled
a vital gap in the market and changed the face of the aviation industry. HISTORIC HOMESDuring the 15th and 16th centuries, French aristocrats built beautiful châteaux, such as Chenonceau (above), in the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and other regions of France. These houses were elaborately decorated by the best artists and craftsmen. Today, most are state-owned and open to the public.
TOUR DE FRANCE
The Tour de France cycle
race was first held in 1903 and is the most important sporting event in France.
Every July, thousands of
people line the route to
support their favorite team or cheer on the winner. The
race covers about 2,500 miles (4,000 km) and is divided into
20 or more daily stages.
VINEYARDS
The Romans first planted grape vines in southern France about 2,000 years ago.
Today, France is the world’s major wine-producing country, selling a range of wines for the home
market and for export. The type of wine produced depends on the soil, location, and climate
where the vine is planted.
Wines from Burgundy,
Champagne, and the Rhône
valley are sold worldwide.
FRENCH CHEESEAmong France’s best-known cheeses are Brie, Camembert, and Roquefort. Mountain regions each have several goats’-milk cheeses, while cheese from Normandy tends to be made from cows’ milk. A cheese is usually named after its town or region.
