VIENNA, AUSTRIAVienna is a city of Baroque buildings, palaces, and famous concert halls. Grand balls with traditional waltzes are still customary. These are a reminder of when the city was the center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which controlled large parts of east and central Europe.

SLOVENIAAfter centuries of rule by overlords, Slovenia became independent in 1991. Although the population is only 2 million, the national culture is strong. The famous Lipizzaner show horses are named after the Slovenian farm where they were first bred.

SWISS WATCHESThe Swiss invented the first wristwatch, the first quartz watch, and the first water-resistant watch. With their worldwide reputation for quality and style, timepieces make up the country’s third largest export.

The opera ball in Vienna

ALPSThe Alps run from southeast France and spread eastward through Switzerland and northern Italy into Austria and Slovenia. A popular tourist destination, the Alps are famous for dramatic scenery and winter sports.

The high and graceful stride of the Lipizzaner horses makes them excel in competitions.

The Swiss speak German, French,
Italian, and Romansh.
