eparated from asian russia
(see pp.78–79) by the Ural
Mountains, European Russia takes up about one-third of the European landmass. The climate and landscape range from cold desert and frozen tundra in the north to the warm coast of the
Black Sea in the southwest. Forests and grassy steppes cover vast areas, and Europe’s two largest lakes, the Ladoga and the Onega,
lie here. Life for most Russians changed considerably after the collapse of communism in 1991, since when the country has been through enormous economic and political changes. More than
110 million people—three-quarters of the total Russian population—
live in European Russia, most of them in cities. The huge capital, Moscow, is famous for its onion-domed churches and the medieval Kremlin, residence of the Russian president.
ST PETERSBURGOnce Russia’s capital, St Petersburg was built in the 18th century by Tsar Peter the Great as a “Window on the West.” Today, it is a popular tourist destination, full of grand palaces and extravagant architecture (left). The city spreads over some 40 islands, linked by a network of canals and rivers.
EDUCATIONChildren go to school here from the age of 6 through to 15, or 17. After a decline due to lack of money after the fall of communism, these days Russia’s free state education is
good and Russia’s literacy rate
is high, at 98 percent. Lately more private schools have opened, too.
BALLETRussia is famous for its ballet companies, such
as the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow and the Kirov Ballet of St Petersburg. Most of the ballets performed are classics, such as S

or S

.
Developed in Europe in the 19th century, ballet became a popular form of entertainment in
the 20th century.
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood marks the spot where Tsar Alexander II was murdered in 1881.
Sleeping Beauty
is
performed here by dancers from the Kirov Ballet.
