A look at time
What time is it right now? The answer depends on where you
are. If it’s noon in Santiago, Chile, it will be midnight in Perth,
Australia. To make sense of this, the world is divided into 24
time zones, and clocks in each zone are set to the same time.
RUSSIA covers eleven
time zones, because it
stretches all the way
from Europe to Asia.

GREENWICH MERIDIAN
All time zones are measured in
relation to this line, which runs
through Greenwich, England.
Party time! One of the first
populated places to celebrate
the New Year each year is
Kiribati in the Christmas
Islands. Hawaii, which is
to the east of the
international dateline, is
one of the last places to
join the party.
MIDNIGHT SUN
At points near the North
and South poles, the Sun
doesn’t set at all at certain
times of the year.
O Places to the west of the
international date line are one day
ahead of places to the east.
O Many countries move an hour
ahead in the summer so there is
more light in the evenings. This is
called daylight saving time. However
the practice isn’t always popular
with farmers, who need light in the
early morning.
