Model the equation using tiles.
Remove one green tile from each side of
the equation so th a t all rem aining green
tiles are on one side.

equation to form zero pairs that can
be removed.
Notice that two green tiles equal six
yellow tiles. You can divide the tiles
on each side o f th e e q u a tio n in to tw o
identical groups, as shown.
So, one green tile equals th re e y e llo w
tiles. The solution o f 3b - 4 = b + 2
is b = 3. You can s u b s titu te 3 fo r b
to check.
