Using a Map


Materials: Posters 1 and 2; world map or globe
Have a volunteer point out the area of ancient Greece on a world
map or globe. Using Poster 1 (Map of Ancient Greece), review
the geography of ancient Greece and the surrounding areas,
including the Plain of Marathon, the area of Macedonia, the
empire of Persia, and the continents of Europe and Asia. Using
Poster 2 (Battle of Thermopylae), review the geography and routes
of the second Persian war, including the Hellespont channel,
the mountain pass of Thermopylae, the island of Salamis, and
the areas of Greek resistance. Have students talk about these
locations and their importance to the ancient Greek civilization.

Materials: Civilization Chart created in previous lessons;
Instructional Master 1B-1; drawing paper,
drawing tools
Note: Be sure to save The Ancient Greek Civilization Chart for
future reference, as it will also be used in the Grade 2 Greek Myths
domain.
Review with students the fi ve components of the ancient Greek
civilization that they have learned about: jobs, city-states, leaders,
religion, and contributions. Ask students what they see in the
images and what they remember about each component. Have
students form fi ve groups. Assign one square to each group, and
have every group draw a picture and write a sentence about the
images in their square. Allow the groups to share their drawings
and sentences with the class.
➶ Above and Beyond: You may wish to have some students
complete Instructional Master 1B-1 on their own if they have not
done so already.
