  1. Union: The Union was made up of the northern states that did
    not secede from the United States. (smiling face)

  2. Civil war: A civil war is a war between different groups of
    people or regions within one country. (smiling face)

  3. Rebels: Rebels was the name given to the Union soldiers.
    (frowning face)

  4. Emancipation Proclamation: The Emancipation Proclamation
    said that slavery would be abolished in the Confederate
    states. (smiling face)

  5. Yankees: The Yankees fought for the Union. (smiling face)
    Directions: I am going to read more sentences using other words
    you have heard in the read-alouds. If I use the word correctly in my
    sentence, circle the smiling face. If I do not use the word correctly
    in my sentence, circle the frowning face. I will say each sentence
    two times.

  6. Value: A broken pencil is of great value when you are trying to

  7. Expand: The balloon continued to expand until it suddenly
