Below is a list of some of the words that your child will be learning about and using.
Try to use these words as they come up in everyday speech with your child.- plantations—The South was home to many cotton plantations during the time of
the U.S. Civil War. - slavery—Slavery in the United States was fi nally ended after the U.S. Civil War.
- Underground Railroad—The Underground Railroad was a secret route used by
slaves to escape to the North. - rebellious—Because slaves wanted their freedom, they were considered
rebellious. - economy—The economy of the North was largely dependent on factories,
whereas the economy of the South was largely dependent on plantations.
- Read Aloud Each Day
It is very important that you read with your child every day. There should be time to
read to your child and also time to listen to your child read to you. I have attached a list of
recommended trade books related to the U.S. Civil War that may be found at the library
in addition to several resources found on the Internet.Be sure to let your child know how much you enjoy hearing about what s/he has
learned at school.
